Early cavities — how to spot them in time

Cavities start quietly — no pain, no hole, no alarm. Usually the first sign is a matte white spot, easy to mistake for plaque. It is also the best moment to react: early cavities can often be stopped without drilling, which is a completely different story from a root canal six months later.

What early cavities look like — 5 signals

1. Matte white spot

The classic sign. The tooth loses its shine in one spot, becomes chalky white. Especially visible after drying the tooth with a paper towel — healthy enamel shines, early caries is matte.

2. Mild sensitivity to sweets

Not pain — more a brief "sting" after candy, ice cream, or sweet coffee. Gone in seconds. If it repeats on the same tooth, check.

3. Roughness your tongue keeps noticing

Healthy enamel is smooth. When your tongue snags on one spot again and again — the surface is starting to dissolve.

4. Faint yellowish or light brown discoloration

Not a black hole — a subtle, lighter shade, often in the grooves of molars.
